I build automobile and railroad models as a hobby. I have a circular fluorescent magnifying lamp, but at my age I needed some extra lighting to augment what I had. At age 69 I welcome it. This excellent desk lamp has filled the bill with nice white ambient lighting. It is attractive, not too big, adjustable and doesn't take up a lot of room on my work table. The base is heavy enough so the lamp is stable and doesn't tip over. Simple assembly consists of just plugging the fluorescent tube into the lamp's socket. Very happy with it and the price was right. Entire purchase transaction was perfect for me.

I purchased this lamp solely for putting it on a timer and having it light up an hour before my alarm in the winter months and post- Daylight Saving Time. I have it on my desk across the room. By the time my alarm goes off in the morning, I'm ready to wake up for the day. Is it any better than a regular lamp? I'm not sure about that and if that's what you're doing, try a regular lamp with a harsh bulb first.
The hue of the lamp is an eerie blue/fluorescent shade- it's a very cool and harsh light. It doesn't feel like natural sunlight at all (which is what I wanted). I can't imagine using it as a general lamp, as it does have the "spotlight" feel to it and it does not light up a room. It would probably do a decent job if you were painting models/needing a precise match of color (if you don't mind fluorescent lights).
